On another Day

Social commentary- On another day

((Here on the Masterpost))

On another day,
I will not drink.
I will not frolic naked,
I will not punch an officer.

On another day,
I will not smoke.
I will not injest poison,
I will not let it spread.

On another day,
I will not snort coke.
I will not see something
That you know isn't there.

On another day,
I will pay attention to my girlfriend
I will not fuck her best friend
And lie to her face about it.

On another day,
I will come to school,
I will come home to Mom and Dad.

...But that's all going to be on another day.
Until then...I'm happy.

When will I set myself straight?
On another day, thank you.

Dramatic Monolgue: Callisto's Last Stand (part of the Gaiaverse)

Dramatic Monologue

Callisto's last stand

It was cruel what you did,
You made it seem like a deliberate provocation

Now I'm here, stepping on your edge of the world
Clad in armor yet naked in mind and soul.

The world you own crumbles to your feet
Just as it would if it signals destruction

I am the chosen One
I am the warrior of destiny.

You are the daughter of the emperor
He who rises from the Ashes

You challenge me to save the Earth
You've even spilled much blood.

You've recuited those dear to you,
And reluctantly they've been dealt with.

As my comrades and I approach your kingdom,
My heart pounds.

My heart weeps,
the human in me trembles.

I must do what is my duty...
And shed the memories of the human in you.

Though difficult, I can't lie
Not now, when everything is at stake.

I still see the look in your eyes
When you were taken away by your Father.

Your lifeless, sad and deadly gaze haunts me the most,
Surpassing even the faces of the innocents I had slain.

I am the warrior of light and I must stop you.

I can't forget that the human in you is no more.

Spoken Word

Spoken word

Bah bump buh pop!
Bah bump buh pop!
What's that?
What's that?
Sound of your heartbeat
Blood rushed through my feet

Yet I am not movin
Have nothing but feelin
Rushing heat on my face
Heartbeat jumping pace

Bah bump bah pop
Bah bump buh pop
Oh god, oh god!
Oh shit, oh shit!
I feel like I'm gonna implode
With heartfelt emotion
Searching for conviction
Eating your heart
Making you start
On your ramble of wild, insane
Crazy rant of pain!
Which is all in vain!

We're all in vain
...Fuck you you're nuts
No wait...so am I
Damn it
Ruining me to bits
With a bunch of mindless fits.

Untitled extended metaphor

Extended Metaphors

I watched the pig devour his salad
Grinding the tomato bits into his infantine trap.
Round, red cheeks huffing and puffing again and again
Like practically a nonstop machine.

After that, the drink of water followed.
Oh my, the water!
He made it look so that an entire river was swallowed
I imagined the swimmers
Screaming and begging for their lives as they were pushed into
the gorge of his gullet.

And then, with a single burp,
I blinked as his spectacle came to an end.
Digging into a bowl of baby mush,
I raised the spoon to my little brother's mouth.
Within a few minutes this giggling child...
Would once again transform into a heartless, hungry
creature.

Oh boy, I can't wait!

Poetry: The Curse of Customer Service

(Masterpost)

The curse of customer service

This isn't a rant
But I am in a tent
I am away from city life
Trying to limit all the strife

Worst things are happening
But right now I'm the one crumbling
Believe it or not my reasons are clear
My workplace is something that I can no longer bear.

If one says that this place is dirty,
the following man behind him will add that its filthy.
Hell even the hobo's creepy and rude
I could swear the ugly had a thing for me.

Lines the length of anacondas
All of them becoming fattening pirahnas.
Ironic that we need you all

Because the lack of you would be our downfall.
Lines the length of anacondas
All of them becoming fattening pirahnas.
Ironic that we need you all
Because the lack of you would be our downfall.

Burgers, fries and drinks...
All in excess is dangerous, methinks.
If you do take it all once in a bit
You would have less fits.

If you said that your burger's plain and that's what I heard,
don't you come to complain or else I'll call you a turd.
When we say that we want you to come back soon,
What we're really waiting for is for pigs to jump over the moon.

Poetry: The Boy Who Loathed The Sun

Here is the Masterpost

This is part of my poery that I submitted to the Re:Verse poetry magazine ,now called Young Poets. It's actually one of my personal favorites. :) Enjoy!

Dr. Fritz, the boy who loathed the Sun
A Poem by Suzanne Helen James

On a bright and sunny day,
I believe we’re still in May...
Little boys and girls are outside playing away.
The lads are pushing, tumbling and gallivanting,
The lasses are chatting, giggling and bickering.
But yet...not all the children are happy.
In fact, one child is wallowing in misery.

This boy is a special little one,
The bright outdoors aren’t his kind of fun.
He eats, drinks and broods in shadow,
As deviant thoughts gleam in his eyes of yellow.
“I shall come out when the sun is gone!!” He mutters.
Everyone was too scared to tell him otherwise, especially the teachers.

But the loneliness doesn’t phase him...
The boy’s ideals are far from a whim!
His first experiment? Catapult a flurry of rocks towards the bright sphere!
But...his aim isn’t good and they don’t really go anywhere.
Ghostly face grimacing,
The boy swears to carry on plotting!

Experiment number two? Alter the Earth’s rotation!
But this only works in movies, so this turns out to be fiction!
His fangs gritting together,
The boy promises never to surrender!

But then one day, the boy hatches his perfect plan...
Cackling , “This is even better than my idea with the giant fan!”
So on the last hour of that fateful day,
With a shot of his ray gun, the sky turned dark and grey.

Now it is always night and out comes the boy to shine!
Happy and hungry, he seeks us out to dine!
Sparkling pale skin, shiny fangs, he is not like you or me...
That scheming little brat is a vampire, you see!

So after you listen to this tragic story,
I implore you, take arms to regain our human glory!
We are in a war to win back our freedom,
And deliver ourselves from the reign of the Vampire Kingdom!

It has been too long since the last known sun,
When I had seen our own children having fun.
To those who live on after me,
Let us fight for a bright, sunny eternity...!

Caught in a sleepy trap,
Damien was then awakened by the teacher’s slap.
As punishment, she gave him more school later.
Though sleeping didn’t make detention easier...
What else was he to do, he was stuck here all summer!

Masterpost of this blog (to be updated frequently)

Greetings and good evening (It's eve here where I am and I just like being courteous)

This blog has had it's share of ups and downs and even you can joke it had some turn arounds where it was shook all about. (Vague song reference...) But at least it had at least a dash of at least everything; poetry, prose, some stories, some crossovers...

And even a Red Manifesto.

But bad jokes aside, this blog has been at least for the good part of the later 2000s when I used it, an outlet for my creative endeavors. I haven't been on here since but that still hasn't stopped me from appreciating what it is I've left here. However, as wonderful and as memorable as this blog is, format-wise it's not very helpful. For some reason the scrolling option (where you had the option of scrolling infinitely until the first post) is no longer available; thus the only way of accessing it is to go through the archives.

There  27+ public posts currently on this blog. This at least means that you don't have a mountain of things to scroll back on, but then again using the Archive at all times isn't and shouldn't be used as a nearby ressource to find everything else or a particular post that you're looking for.
That's why I've made this post, which will collect all of my works that I've placed on this platform and everything else as well that's coming. Because there's always more coming.

((UPDATE: Regularly things are added. The latest post you can see on the front page. To access this page, click on the Masterpost link.))

So while you're seated here, here, grab a seat, take a drink and relax. Enjoy yourself and look at this selection here below:

If you want some Poetry:

For Action!Adventure! Comedy! Stories set in my original anime-inspired series Gaia guardians:

TV/movie/music/book-related projects:

Original stand-alone stories (written between 2006 and 2014):

Non-fiction related projects:

As mentioned though, this Masterpost will be updated shortly because I will be using this blog essentially as a repertoire for all my literary and creative works. I'm doing this in order to have a place where all my good writings will be displayed in open space. Also, all the posts are in chronological order of when I posted when; writing-wise though, I have written them in the last few years, between 2007 and eventually 2014.

And again, this isn't the end of anything...Just the beginning.

Or whatnot.

Cheers and thanks for stopping by!

See you on the Flipside,

Suzanne Helen James.

A special spasm of thought

This particular post will be in response to my lab assignment that I have for school.

As it pertains to the concept of blogging, I thought, "why create another blog that I will forget about...when I can just plug and update my current one?"

After all, it's simple to access, I have long been acquainted with it already and I will likely get a few more viewers on here than I've ever had prior to this happening!

So with that being said...

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to my blog! I hope your stay here is pleasant and enjoyable.

This writing blog contains my thoughts and comments on concepts or various ideas in today's media (in particular, what's the haps in the TV and the Movies) that struck me so much that I had to blog about it. (I could tweet but I never feel like that's enough for me. It limits me to a measly 140 characters.)

Like, for example, I've previously reviewed the aftermath of the Lip Service TV series following the death of the protagonists involved in the series' main Love Triangle. (As seen here)

Another post that might be of interest features my original crossover idea between the American Nickleodeon cartoon "Legend of Korra" and the Japanese anime series "Mobile Suit Gundam". And yes, i'm sure that a unique and oddly mashed-up idea.

However.

Trust me when I say that IT LOOKS AND SOUNDS AWESOME

Prior to writing prose though, I have also an earlier section where I post my poetry of days past. I'm no longer a frequent poet, but everytime I do feel inspire to write in rhymes, I don't hesitate to post it. If you'd like to read any of it, you can do so by clicking here, here or here.

Well, I think i've said enough for now. If you've read this far, then you must be pretty interested in what I have to say.

...Or you're the supervisor reading it for marks.

Which is totally fine too.

Regardless however...

I do thank you all for visiting!

Suzanne Helen James.

Scout vs. Wylde: A comparison of two smashing bardettes by Suzanne Helen James

((Here is the Masterpost for everything else), including this)

"Ashley Wylde's Canadian cousin"

It’s the best way to describe her, honestly.

Scout, also known as Anthea Ballam, is the reigning Canadian Youth Slam poet champion of 2012. She’s been in the Slam poetry circuit since 2011 and has been recently been traveling all over Canada performing in competitions. I met her while in College last term and through her was introduced into the slam poetry world.

When I looked up at Ashley’s Tumblr, she reminded me so much of her…

It must be the swag. Or the adorkable. I don’t know.

Then, as an experiment, I decided to listen to their poetry side by side. Now honestly, Scout’s poetry log isn’t quite as extensive as Ashley’s as she hasn’t been filmed often, but she has her share of strong, dark poetry that I’ve heard her perform personally.

Now, I’ve listened to “Oh, I’m sorry” (by Ashley) and “I’m sorry” (by Scout) and both are unique mirrors of social justice told from two different points of view. Listen to Ashley’s first and Scout’s afterwards.

While Ashley’s piece was stronger in terms of subject matter and was delivered with an unapologetic ironic punch, Scout’s specialty is her mischievous and sarcastic delivery. I see it as a perfect response and counterpart to the former post.

Then I listened to another set of similar opposites; Wylde’s “The perfect amount of insane” and Scout’s “Sometimes.” (featured as the link of the video).

The first video is beautiful, slow, heartbreaking, straightforward and quotable as hell. Its gripping, powerful and the poem finds strength in trying to find mutuality within the addressee and the speaker who’re opening themselves.

In contrast, the latter’s poetry is brash, fast, jumbled and it makes you feel trapped and bombarded. Scout’s unpredictable pace alters between fast and slow stanzas as the speaker makes us see things from the inside out and how their own thoughts are the only thing that can’t betray them, that wouldn’t leave. By the time the poem ends, you’re left breathless but feeling a little better because you’re finally able to peek out and see what’s outside, just like the speaker.

Both poems share the same theme of openness and gripping onto that one person who will stand by you through anything you or the world will deal with. They’re two sides of the same coin.

But even with all of these similarities, a few more things have to be considered.

One: I have a personal bias to favor Scout because I’ve seen her live and her online repertoire isn’t as complete as it should be. My opinion isn’t the definitive one on her and while I’m sure there will be zealous fangirls, let’s be respectful of each poet and appreciate them, not belittle them.

Two: I’ve just discovered Ashley and I’m sure as I’ll get to know that side of her, I’ll get to appreciate her even further (though to be honest, she’s cute and adorable and just utterly well-built and well-rounded and cute and adorable and mildly reminds me of Brooke Brodack and she should flex and be more shirtless often)

And three, their styles are completely different, at least from what I’ve seen and that often determines their performances. (I will also admit that I had a brief but containable crush on Scout, so while my judgement towards her is unaffected by that, that doesn’t mean I won’t fangirl every now and then though she’ll never know this)

But all technicalities and form aside, I say go check them both out, especially Scout because she needs more love and Ashley could get to know her extended family.

And hey, you never know. Wouldn’t it be awesome if they performed together? (Also, I see them as a good brotp. Imagine the poetry they’d write together and the adorable times they’d spend together…)

Unfortunately though, Scout doesn’t have a Tumblr, no matter how much I kept pestering her about it, so the best way is to see her few videos on Youtube under the Scout Vancouver poetry slam tag. (Also, she plays original music, which you can look about here, here and here too. These are oldies though, and she’s yet to actively update her stuff in the last while, I think these are good starting pieces no. And her facebook is really private, so no, I won’t be giving those away.)

And even though you can find our beloved Ashley’s Tumblr and Youtube if you look at her track tag, I’ll give it here anyway.

Oh yes.

One more thing.

Did I mention these two were born ten days apart?

Scout’s birthday is on April 11th and Ashley’s on the 22nd.

A mild fun tidbit I wanted to share.

Thanks for reading and spread the love!

((This is dated by a few months earlier this year, so by the time I had written this, I believe she was already touring the country. She's back now and if you're ever in the Vancouver area, come see what other poets of her caliber can do on Monday nights at Cafe Deux Soleils, on 2550 Commercial Drive.))

The Return to the Beginning, A manifesto

Hello there, all of you in the cyberspace.

How goes it? Goes it well? Good. Anyway, I'm here to announce that "Spasms of free thought" is undergoing an overhaul...into the old-fashioned writing outlet it was originally created for. Though I am still hard at work in my other projects, I am first and foremost before all, a writer. I dabble in poetry, scriptwriting and general fiction pieces. I intend to make a career out of it. I'd like to tackle whatever subjects are meaningful to me and catch my interest at the time.

After all, there is no time like the Present.

So with that having been said, I shall be posting regular posts with my writings once again and you are free to comment or even browse. But regardless, the tracker counts just how many times someone's been here, so even if you've not commented, I can still take a wild guess that someone else had the gall to browse every once in a while other than me. :P

...Now, onward and enough with the prologue!

Update: As always, my contribution to the Online poetry magazine "Young Poets" has surfaced once again with a flurry of new entries, including my own. The subject of this entry was to write Ekphrastic poetry, where you wrote a poem on a piece of art. Today I will post both my muse and the poem itself, in its original, un-betaed, unedited form.

To see the current and final version, go to www.youngpoets.ca/ezine, looking under Suzanne Helen James.

On Friday, I will post the other poem that preceded it, and also tell you of the new blog dedicated to the promotion of the society's workers in Arts and Entertainment.

Enjoy and again, comment.

The maid and the mystery painting
A free verse by Suzanne Helen James

One afternoon while cleaning my master’s attic,
I stumbled upon a hidden painting.
Mesmerized, I grabbed it and wiped the dust away.
“Oh my, oh my!” I exclaimed,
“What an adorable picture!”
But who was the child on the canvas, you ask?

His dual locks of brown and blond parted apart so perfectly,
They radiated of divine beauty!
Who would have guessed how his hair changed so much later on!
And then I stared at the eyes...oh what a striking pair of eyes!
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words?
Well the eyes in this one could pen shelves upon shelves of novels!
But these days, these same eyes reflect everything but happiness.

After following the rosy cheeks and the pert nose,
I came upon the godly smile that shined through the whole portrait!
It was so simple, so innocent, so carefree...
If I were to see such a smile again today, it would be nothing short of a miracle!

“Why is that?” I asked myself,
“What has possessed such a beautiful, delightful child...
And transformed him into a grumpy, sour, wild-haired man?!”

I had to know the identity of the man on the canvas!
I had to confirm my suspicions!
After weeks of arduous research,
The results came to fruition.
Though the resemblance is unbelievable, it cannot be denied.

What if I were to tell you...
The cute little boy with honeyed hair,
Incredible dark brown eyes,
The smile of an angel...

Grew up to be the same man who shouted madly when his piano wasn’t perfectly cleaned?
The man who played for many courts of Kings and Queens of the world?
The man who left hundreds of sheet music lying on the floor every night?

What if I were to tell you that the boy was going to be one of the most reknowned
composers of our age?
What if I were to tell you that the little boy was going to be our one, our only, our master Ludwig van
Beethoven?!

However, I do ask to keep this secret between us, dear.
For as tempting as telling the secret is,
You must think about the fact that no one would ever believe us if we were to tell it!

So with that concludes Today's entry. To see the picture in question, copy and paste this link:

An impromptu revival...

Hello there!

Long time no see, you cyberspace dogs!

How are you all?

I haven't heard from any of you in a little bit. And you're busy with lives so full of who knows what you all seem to ignore me. Well, boo to you. Take a break and laugh with me. Look down and see what you have to see. See that what will be occuring today will not be the product of your innocence, but instead of your malice and misunderstanding...

I dunno what I just said, and I don't know why. :P

Buttt...Well, I guess I should post something. Oi.

Today's post features a poem that was published in the Young Poets electronic magazine; it's my first official electronic publication. Woof. :P

Tell me your thoughts and whatnot. Original link:

My obsessive unexploitation of the Free Verse
By Suzanne Helen James
This is a free verse,
Something I'm not gonna curse.
The rules are what I strive for,
Though I admit, I've strayed once before.
Tempted by the twisting of rhyme,
I'd watch it pour out like wine.
For a while, it was a habit...
But in the end, my love was to make words fit.
If I could stretch again and look to disorder,
This time I'm afraid I'll get lost forever!
I'm trying to make every word an obsession,
Though the rhyme is my ultimate addiction!
As you can see,
Free verse is something that can never be!
I try to say things out of the blue
After all, I've been there so you know it's true!
I could try to change, if I may,
But I don't think I'll want to see the day!
So I will accept my pet peeve, my little excess.
Random, cluttered words are not pretty...in fact, they're a mess!

Thoughts? As always, they're appreciated.

Ps; I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm going to have a professional twitter account. It is only for professional reason and I will post future and current writings to look out for. So comment here or as a tweet:

8th post

Well, on this monday evening, I'm not especially focused on the blog (am I ever really?)

So I'll post another poem, then leave it at that.

Thoughts? Blah blah.

Emotional Symbiosis

-->
I know I say that i love you
But these words are not directed at you
They are directed at your shadow
Rather the vision I am making myself of you
And the you inside aches
Because it knows this
Yet he stay anyway
Yet you stay anyway
After all, you do actually love me.
Yet, yet I yearn not for you
I have never yearned for you
But i have accustomed myself to your being around me
I squeeze your kindness
And absorb it into my breast
But then you are just as cruel
For you know
You know!
What don't you know?
Yet you stay.
The fool follows.
He lies to all
Lies for me!
I am not in love
He is too in love
An obvious contrast
That isn't easily admitted
And will never be
Until I break him
If i haven't already
But..I can't do this to him.
Not anymore.
I have to let go of him.
If he is to let go of me.
Perhaps I do love him after all.
Lets just hope that he loves me back enough to release me.
As I will release him.
Until next,
See you on the flipside.

For the 4th post...a poem

Alrighty...hey there y'all in cyberspace. Uhm, if we wanna keep ourselves on the subject of this wonderful blog, I'm feeling pretty quiet bout that today...so I'll just post my poem. You'll read it if you'd like and that'll be that. Feel free to comment as needed, and...I will you see you all (hopefully hear from you too) soon.

This poem was a part of the portfolio I submitted in Creative Writing 12 last year. I picked it because it deserves to be seen and it's not one I picked too often. Most times, I'm showing poems that are already known here and there through many newspaper publications...which is why I included some of them in the portfolio. This one has meaning to my heart and it rings true to a certain situation right now.

It's Untitled, but...if you had to give it a name, what would you give it?

Enjoy.

Untitled

"I said I didn’t see you; I had told lies
But I think you knew I had said otherwise.
Another day passes
As we walk through the masses.

In reflex I turn my head,
But already your figure walks far ahead.
As I curse my miss,
I release a bitter hiss.

I reluctantly shrug,
And now I’m wishing for a hug.
Another day passes
As we walk through to our classes.

You and I don’t talk,
We avoid each other wherever we walk.
But next time I see you in my sight,
I’ll break that barrier with all my might.

If you and I exchange a glance,
Will you try what we had once had and give it one more chance?"

((So yeah, that's all for today. Short and sweet. Hikaru-chan will then drop by for a hello, a tech session and we will resume ourselves on another day.

By the way, if it's not obvious ENOUGH, Hikaru and I are NOT the same person. If any of you thought otherwise, then you are seriously not paying attention to how we write our posts. I'm even bothering to make us sound seperate to prove that point.))

Until next time.

See you on the flipside.
